Fried Chicken: Universal Symbol of Racism

That's racist.

There isn’t a corner of the globe, apparently, that is safe from the long arm of the PC police, as one advertising agency in Australia recently found out.

(Bloomberg) — Yum! Brands Inc., owner of the KFC restaurant chain, pulled an Australian television advertisement for the fried-chicken chain after claims it depicted racist stereotypes. The commercial, part of its “Cricket Survival Guide” series, depicts a white Australian fan amidst rowdy supporters of the West Indian team who offers chicken to his rival spectators to get out of an “awkward situation.” After being posted online, the advertisement attracted the attention of U.S. media, with the New York Daily News and Baltimore Sun running online polls of readers on whether it relied on stereotypes.

“To avoid the possibility of any further offense being caused by the advertisement either here or online overseas, KFC will cease running the commercial immediately,” KFC said in a statement on its Australian Web Site. “KFC Australia apologizes unreservedly for any offence caused which of course was wholly unintended.”

The advertisement features supporters of the touring West Indian cricket team and was intended for Australian audiences only, KFC said. “We unequivocally condemn discrimination of any type and have a proud history as one of the world’s leading employers for diversity.”

Initially the Aussie company in question came out swinging saying that the ad was a lighthearted reference to the West Indies cricket team, not a statement on the broader African-American population, let alone all blacks on Earth.  But that wasn’t good enough.  Apparently, according to the PC police, Fried Chicken is now the universal symbol of racism, and the ad had to be pulled.

America has a racist past, no getting around that one.  One of the holdovers of that dark history is the silly association of African Americans with fried chicken.  But this is part of our American history, and has nothing to do with Australia.  Australia never had African slavery, and friend chicken as cuisine is an American export to Australia, just like “shrimp on the barby” is considered Aussie grub here.  But the company in question had no choice but to cave into American PC demands because of the racial firestorm the PC police were threatening to ignite.

What we have here is not racism by some Aussie fast food company, but rather the cultural insularity on the part of the PC Left– many of whom actually pride themselves on their literacy in all things culturally diverse–projecting their sad little racial insecurities onto innocent bystanders halfway across the globe.  And as this little episode illustrates, it often takes more than just a semester abroad and a palestinian keffiyeh round your neck to shed that pesky American insularity of which the internationalist PC Left loves accusing everybody else.

  1. What! Any restaurant serving fried chicken is RACIST. RACIST I say. Only boiled chicken should be served. Watermelon farmers should be jailed.
