HAITI HORROR: “500,000 COULD BE DEAD” – Revisited

Haiti is perhaps the world’s poorest country.  They don’t need this.  Nobody does, but especially not Haiti.  They will take generations, if ever, to recover without our help.

President Rene Preval said he believes thousands were killed in Tuesday afternoon’s magnitude-7.0 quake, and the scope of the destruction prompted other officials to give even higher estimates. Leading Sen. Youri Latortue told The Associated Press that 500,000 could be dead, although he acknowledged that nobody really knows.

“Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed,” Preval told the Miami Herald. “There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them.”  Even the main prison in the capital fell down, “and there are reports of escaped inmates,” U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said in Geneva.

The head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission was missing and the Roman Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince was dead.  “The cathedral, the archbishop’s office, all the big churches, the seminaries have been reduced to rubble,” Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the apostolic envoy to Haiti, told the Vatican news agency FIDES.

Words do not begin to describe the devastation, so I won’t even try.  America owes Haiti a lot.  If they hadn’t won their independence from the French, there wouldn’t have been a Louisiana Purchase.  Help is on the way, good people of Haiti.  God be with you.

UPDATE: Disaster relief for Haiti, here or here. Both are legit.

UPDATE: U.S. Military mobilizes thousands for Haiti relief.

UPDATE: Nobody’s running Haiti.  U.S. to step in?

UPDATE: Best on-the-ground, first-person account so far.

UPDATE: Gangs with machetes do battle in the streets for food.

  1. 500,000. Really? I seriously doubt the toll will come anywhere near that. Bill Clinton already talking about rebuilding Haiti. What’s the bill going to be and why should we foot the bill? We should donate our fair share along with the rest of the world.

  2. Will the dems sneak the health care bill thru while the rest of us and concerned about Haiti? You can bet they will try.

  3. If not, then it soon may be, as the days and weeks go by without food, water, electricity, medicine, etc. Their entire infrastructure has collapsed. It’s Mad Max there right now. It won’t be long before starvation and disease begins to add to the death toll.

  4. We have food. The question is will the government get off their tails and get it there. We can get the Obama’s and the Clinton’s 6000 miles to Hawaii in a few hours. Why can’t we get surplus food to Haiti 700 miles away? Katrina all over again. Will they blame Bush because Haiti like New Orleans is mostly black? After all Obama inherited the government from Bush. Then again if you go back far enough Bush inherited it from George Washington.

  5. rooster, whether they blame Obama like they did Bush is a negatory. We’ll keep a watch on that, but it’s still way too early.

  6. But I’m a prophet. How can I be a prophet if I don’t tell the future? Believe me. They won’t blame Obama. It must be Bush’s fault. Obama just inherited this earthquake from Bush.

Ray Nagin, major of New Orleans during Katrina said that the lord sent Katrina to punish us for Bush’s war in Iraq. I wonder if this calamity was caused by the lord to punish us for electing an idiot.

  9. They got the Cadillac health plan no tax for unions while others concerned themselves with Haiti.

Just like I called it. Expect more.
