Study: Abstinence-only programs “might” work

This runs counter to the secular progressive narrative, so the fact that they are willing to concede that abstinence programs “might” or “could” work is a big step for these lefty hipsters.

Sex education classes that focus on encouraging children to remain abstinent can persuade a significant proportion to delay sexual activity, researchers reported Monday in a landmark study that could have major implications for U.S. efforts to protect young people against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Only about a third of sixth- and seventh-graders who completed an abstinence-focused program started having sex within the next two years, researchers found. Nearly half of the students who attended other classes, including ones that combined information about abstinence and contraception, became sexually active.  The findings are the first clear evidence that an abstinence program could work.

“I think we’ve written off abstinence-only education without looking closely at the nature of the evidence,” said John B. Jemmott III, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who led the federally funded study. “Our study shows this could be one approach that could be used.”

Sixth and seventh graders having sex.  It’s the new normal.  Thanks, hippies!  But they’ve been reluctant to teach abstinence, and entirely unwilling to teach abstinence-only.  Instead they prefer teaching classes on the finer points of condom use and fisting because, as they say, “kids are going to do it anyway.”  Never mind that abstinence had been taught since time immemorial before the sexual revolution came along, and it worked.  But it doesn’t work anymore, they respond, because the sexual revolution has lifted all those outdated taboos on sex.   That’s true.  But isn’t that precisely why abstinence SHOULD be taught–to re-impose those healthy taboos once again, and  to counter the sexual revolution’s message that sex is free and fun and stop being such a hater?  The traditions of old have to be revived, and one of them is abstinence.  Especially when they are proven to have some effect.  When you teach them how to use a condom, or how to safely fist your gay partner, that kind of defeats the entire purpose, even if you are doing that alongside an abstinence message.  If given an equal choice, of course kids are going to choose sex!  Real taboos aren’t “optional.”  That’s why sex before marriage shouldn’t be presented to these kids as a choice; and that’s precisely how it’s being presented to them by these damn counterculture hippies.
