Once Islamic, Always Islamic

Look out Spain, the House of Islam has its sights set on you!

For 700 years Spain lived under the Islamic yoke before the Christian kings gave the muzzies a final shove off in their 15th century “reconquista”.  The Islamic world has never forgiven them for it.  The longing for their lost “al-Andalus” burns deep within their ancestral memory.  To Islam, territory that has gone Islamic shall forevermore remain Islamic.  This is not the view of muslim extremists.  It’s quite mainstream.  Certainly mainstream enough to broadcast on Arabian television channels.  I recall a secularist Pakistani friend of mine in college who loved poetry.  One of his themes was “al-Andalus.”  Spain.  Their lost pearl.  What the hell does Pakistan have to do with Spain, you may ask?  The answer:  Islam.  At the time–in my naivete–I considered it quaint.  Not anymore!  Islam does not surrender ownership of any land deemed Dar al-Islam, no matter how much time has passed.

  2. this is simply outrageous language.

I would like to know what place this speaker has in Islamic society. Is he seen as a ‘chomsky’ type or is he a voice of the ‘majority’.

I did see a separate speaker in a mosque saying the same thing so that may answer the question, but what percentage of the Isalmic community really believe this?

  3. paleo,

I don’t know what percentage, but it’s obvious to me this isn’t some terrorist hiding in a cave. He’s on Arab television, which means the government is aware and either doesn’t care or openly encourages this kind of talk.

  4. sure … but if it is al-jezera then it could be an ‘extreme’ cleric tyring to make his ‘case’ to a broader more liberal Saudi / Turk / Jordanian / Egyptian population. No?

  5. At the beginning of the clip it gives his credentials. He’s mainstream.

  6. Why is the ‘former’ minister?

Look, all I’m saying is this is serious and outrageous language and it requires some following up.

  7. Yes, I will see what else I find on him.

  8. He shows up here as a visiting scholar. Not much else:

  9. Have you seen these as well?,2933,351242,00.html

This is just blazon … and really sets the context for the next 50 years on par with or even more tense than the cold war. I’m glad you’ve been collecting all of these things together here.
