Israel Independence Day – April 19, 1947

April 19 marks the 5th of Iyar on the Jewish calendar.  Today is Israel Independence Day.  I found the clip below rather bittersweet and offer it as a tribute to the women of the I.D.F. who help ensure the Jewish state remains free and independent forever.

  1. God bless Israel …

  2. Gorgeous! And the video is mis-titled, as these young women are straight-run mustang OCS students, not beauty pageant participants.
If you’re too young to remember her, read up on Golda Meir. She lived in Milwaukee and Denver for a time, and became Prime Minister of Israel.
I just love it over there. Jews have an obvious reason to visit Israel. Christians will benefit from it, too. Every trip I make, the Christian Holy Sites are thronged with pilgrims from all over the world. If you’ve never been to Jerusalem, you kind of owe it to yourself, if possible. Israel makes it easier than you might think. (A side benefit of traveling El Al is finding out how to do airline security right.)
My first trip was over 30 years ago, not too long after the Litani Operation. When I’d wait for a bus, often female reservists would be waiting, too. The bus was free for them. It was summer, and the most beautiful soldiers in southwest Asia were wearing their O.D. teeshirts, the web slings of their rifles or SMGs slung provocatively (for me) over their shoulders. I have never felt more safe in my life.
