Code name “Cordoba”: Mega Mosque Rises in Shadow of Twin Towers

What's in a name: The "Cordoba Project"

(New York City) – A proposal to build a mosque steps from Ground Zero received the support of a downtown committee despite some loved ones of 9/11 victims finding it offensive.  The 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center was unanimously endorsed by the 12-member Community Board 1’s financial district committee.

The $100 million project, called the Cordoba House, is proposed for the old Burlington Coat Factory building at Park Place and Broadway, just two blocks from the World Trade Center site.  “I think it will be a wonderful asset to the community,” said committee Chairman Ro Sheffe.

Imam Feisel Abdul Rauf, who helped found the Cordoba Initiative following the 9/11 attacks, said the project is intended to foster better relations between the West and Muslims.  He said the glass-and-steel building would include a 500-seat performing arts venue, a swimming pool and a basketball court. “There’s nothing like it,” said Rauf, adding that facilities will be open to all New Yorkers.

“Whatever concerns anybody has, we have to make sure to educate them that we are an asset to the community,” Khan said.  Khan said her group hopes construction on the project will begin by the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Once built, 1,000 to 2,000 Muslims are expected to pray at the mosque every Friday, she said.  No one at last night’s meeting protested the project. But some 9/11 families said they found the proposal offensive because the terrorists who launched the attacks were Muslim.  “I realize it’s not all of them, but I don’t want to have to go down to a memorial where my son died on 9/11 and look at a mosque,” said retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches – whose son Jim, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11.

“If you ask me, it’s a religion of hate,” said Riches, who did not attend last night’s meeting.  Rosemary Cain of Massapequa, L.I., whose son, Firefighter George Cain, 35, was killed in the 2001 attacks, called the project a “slap in the face.”  “I think it’s despicable. That’s sacred ground,” said Cain, who also did not attend the meeting.  “How could anybody give them permission to build a mosque there? It tarnishes the area.”

The name “Cordoba Project” should telegraph to all those with the eyes to see the imperialist nature of Islam in the West today.  The city of Cordoba in Spain, and it’s great cathedral, is still claimed by muslims as “Dar al-Islam.” Once Islamic, always Islamic.  Now they are bringing that same imperialist and expansionist spirit of “mainstream” Islam to New York City, in the very shadow of the World Trade Center.  Now close your eyes and try to imagine the sounds of the muezzin– the call to worship– resounding through the canyons of the city five times a day, and the ACLU defending their rights to do so.  That’s the sound of cultural enrichment!

Sadly, completion of this mega mosque will come before the first brick is laid on the new Freedom Tower.  If that doesn’t say anything about the trajectory of Islam vis a vis the West, I don’t know what does.

  1. Its got to be some very sick joke, surely! Are you New Yorkers all blind & deaf?

  2. They are blinded by their hatred of all things “the Right.” Noticing Islam is a “rightwing” thing to do and feeds the “rightwing agenda”, so they look the other way. They hate conservatives even more than they do Al-Qaida, so naturally Islamization is something they welcome.

  4. New York City, Your apathy and political correctness will be your undoing. You won’t even learn when your towers come crashing down around you. How insensitive. The name Cordoba is very telling – and you still don’t get it.

  5. The American Political correctness and inability to recognize that the enemy is not “radical” at all. There are no ‘moderate Muslims’ … if there were … they would be screaming in the streets, the media, and would be taking out the terrorists instead of aiding and abetting them. They are rejoicing in silence at the terror.

Wake up America. Grow a spine.

Defend your faith, and your country.

  6. Will the left hate the right in 2050 – when the majority votes to install Shari’a law and the jizya, stealing of property, enslavement of your wives and ethnic cleansing of non-muslims or Kafara begins?

The only thing that the West has on them is technology…for now. I’m afraid by the time the bleading hearts wake up – it will be too late.

New York, my advice to you is to learn this phrase:

    ašhadu ‘al-lā ilāha illā-llāhu wa ‘ash-ha-du ‘anna mu-ham-ma-dan ‘ab-du-hoo wa ra-soo-luh

Your life and that of your chldren may, one day, depend on it… As you convert to Islam, forget all the rights that you fought for ie gay marriage and adoption – much less the first amendment, or the fourth, might as well scratch womans’ sufferage too.

  7. A protest of this project is akin to a lynch mob against African a
Americans in the south on the mid 1900s. I remind all of you bigots that freedom of and from religion is a basic tenent of our American way. Grow up and stop living in a world of fear. Maybe you could see better if you took off your white sheets for a minute! I for one will be at the planned protest to counter the hate messages!

  12. I do love the manner in which you have framed this specific challenge and it really does offer me personally some fodder for consideration. On the other hand, coming from what precisely I have experienced, I simply trust as the commentary pack on that people continue to be on point and in no way embark on a soap box of the news of the day. All the same, thank you for this excellent piece and whilst I can not necessarily go along with the idea in totality, I respect your standpoint.
