Secular progressivism and its role in the decline of Western civilization has been previously discussed here at CCHQ .  Now for the mechanics of how that self-destructive value system works its magic.  Below a truly chilling look at what demographers are calling the Demographic Winter.  The decline of the human family.  This isn’t hyperbole or conspiracy talk.  This is the science of demography, and what you will see here will shock you to your core.  The population pyramid with the young on the bottom and the aging on the top that has been the norm since time immemorial has been turned on its head.

The West, and especially in Russia, is on a path of rapid depopulation.  It is said to be Vladimir Putin’s greatest concern. He is actually paying families to have children, but it’s not working because it isn’t economics which is at the root of this problem, it is our changing values.  The sexual revolution, the divorce revolution, cohabitation, nuclear family breakdown, individualism, gender roles, birth control, abortion, hookups with no plans for marriage, prosperity and a lack of economic incentive to procreate, young men no longer motivated to marry as they once were for the sake of sexual gratification, couples marrying at a late age or not forming families, or delaying their first child, etc.  According to the experts, these are some of the major reasons why the West’s fertility rate has so drastically declined.  This is why we are importing a replacement population from Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, while our own shrinks–with the resulting Islamization of the West.

Watch the whole thing.  Demographers are pretty much admitting that their data-based claims affirm 100% the moral and cultural claims being made by social conservatives and traditionalists regarding family and the culture at large.  Let me repeat that.  I’m not only saying that demographer’s data affirms social conservatives, I’m saying that the demographers themselves are admitting that their data confirms social conservative views on the culture.  A culture that for 2,000 years has sustained Western civilization, now being undone in mere decades by the secular progressive cult of “progress.”

“As a society, we don’t like to talk about the causes of fertility decline.  We don’t want to possibly offend other people.  The really chilling thing about demographic winter is that none of these causes can be easily fixed.  It’s who we are, who we have become in these post-modern times.”

The final words of one of the social scientists here:  “Maybe the time of greatness for Western civilization has come and gone, and now we’re going into a retreat,” some cheer with your morning coffee, gentle readers? Probably not. I regret to say that the world that we know today is not the world our children will know.

Why Mahmoud Abbas Cannot Make Peace

Totten — Once in a while, I “meet” someone online, on blogs and in comment sections, who thinks the current round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks might end the conflict, but I don’t think I know anyone in person who lives in the Middle East who believes this. Palestinian journalist Khaled Abu Toameh summed up the consensus view a few days ago. “The peace process is going nowhere,” he wrote, “and everyone is just pretending.” Nations make peace with their enemies, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas — also known as Abu Mazen — is not really Israel’s enemy. He’s hardly a friend or an ally, but the Israeli army and Abbas’s security forces have a better and more professional working relationship with each other right now than they ever have. Even Israel’s hard-line foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, doesn’t think of Abbas as the leader of the enemy camp. “I repeat,” he said a few weeks ago, “Abu Mazen will not fight us.”

Israel’s enemy is the Resistance Bloc consisting of Syria, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah. No one from that bloc is participating in peace talks. Even if Abbas signed a treaty with Israel — a most unlikely event while Hamas holds a gun to his head and even he refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state — it would only mean the war between Israel and Abbas was over. But that war is effectively, though perhaps just temporarily, over already. Not much would actually change. The Arab-Israeli conflict would rage on, as would the Islamist-Israeli conflict. Not even the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would end if Abbas signed a treaty. He couldn’t enforce it.

“By being forced out of the Gaza Strip,” Toameh wrote, “Abbas lost direct control over some 1.5 million Palestinians, roughly half the Palestinians living in the Palestinian territories. … So if Abbas cannot go to the Gaza Strip and has limited control over the West Bank, where is he supposed to implement a peace agreement? In downtown Ramallah? In Tel Aviv?”

The only reason he retains even limited authority is because he extended his expired term in office and is propped up by Israel. He has no authority whatsoever in Gaza and lacks even influence in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran.  If the Iran-led Resistance Bloc was wounded or crumbling, if it was under irresistible pressure from within and without to reform or die, a deal might be possible and would be worth exploring. But that’s not what’s happening. None of the bloc’s leaders will even start peace talks, let alone finish them, while they’re rising in power and have no need to change.

Just a few years ago, Hamas was but one force among several in Gaza, but today it rules with a totalitarian fist. Syria and Hezbollah have seized de facto control over Lebanon, despite Hezbollah’s poor performance in the recent election, while Iran is nearing the threshold of becoming a nuclear-armed regional superpower.

If Abbas had the authority of the Jordanian and Egyptian governments, he might be able to force a cold peace on his people, but he doesn’t. The Resistance Bloc has successfully embedded itself in the Palestinian population and rules roughly half of it. Hamas would simply ignore any treaty Abbas might sign and continue its war against Israel, just as Hezbollah does whatever it wants up north in Lebanon. Abbas can’t put a stop even to his own part of this region-wide conflict any more than Saad Hariri in Beirut can end his.

Flaming Korans, Victory Mosques, Leftist Hypocrisy

The episode involving the kooky Florida pastor who threatened to burn the Koran was what you might call a teachable moment for me.  I had mixed feelings about the whole thing from start to finish.  On the one hand I felt that it was wrong to insult Muslims without specific cause, but on the other I thought it could serve as a much needed blow against PC (not against Muslims).  Anything to wake us from our Left-induced stupor.  But I also worried about the visuals and that it might backfire on us.  So my thinking on the matter wasn’t settled.  The kook pastor represents the most extreme and fringe element to be found in the Christian world, and yet even he didn’t have the guts to follow through on his threats.  That pretty much disproves the Left’s narrative about fundamentalist Christianity as far as I’m concerned.  Our fundies can’t even muster the nerve to burn an inanimate object.  Scary, aren’t they?  I was also disgusted by the one-way sensitivity the Left shows for Islam after decades of blashpeming Jesus and desecrating Christian symbols in the name of art and freedom of speech.  Their outrage was obviously false.  Perhaps if the pastor had applied for an NEA grant and burned the Koran as performance art that would have made it more acceptable.   And what about that pastor’s free speech rights?  If you’re a Liberal, free speech obviously only applies to Leftists desecrating Christian symbols and Muslims building victory mosques at Ground Zero.  You see, those are shots against “the Man,” so every level of their transgression can be defended on the grounds of “free speech.”  At the very least, we owe that Florida pastor a debt of gratitude for exposing their hypocrisy to the light of day.  But the rabbit hole goes far deeper in Mark Steyn’s excellent column as he slices and dices Muslim and Liberal hypocrisy and the one-way sensitivity that is multiculturalism.  This is a CCHQ must read.

MOLLIFYING MUSLIMS, AND MUSLIFYING MOLLIES

Too many people in the free world have internalized Islam’s view of them. [They have internalized the neo-Marxist narrative of “the other”, a modern update of the “noble savage”]. A couple of years ago, I visited Guantanamo and subsequently wrote that, if I had to summon up Gitmo in a single image, it would be the brand-new copy of the Koran in each cell: To reassure incoming prisoners that the filthy infidels haven’t touched the sacred book with their unclean hands, the Korans are hung from the walls in pristine, sterilized surgical masks. It’s one thing for Muslims to regard infidels as unclean, but it’s hard to see why it’s in the interests of us infidels to string along with it and thereby validate their bigotry. What does that degree of prostration before their prejudices tell them about us? It’s a problem that Muslims think we’re unclean. It’s a far worse problem that we go along with it.

Take this no-name pastor from an obscure church who was threatening to burn the Koran. He didn’t burn any buildings or women and children. He didn’t even burn a book. He hadn’t actually laid a finger on a Koran, and yet the mere suggestion that he might do so prompted the President of the United States to denounce him, and the Secretary of State, and the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, various G7 leaders, and golly, even Angelina Jolie. President Obama has never said a word about honor killings of Muslim women. Secretary Clinton has never said a word about female genital mutilation. General Petraeus has never said a word about the rampant buggery of pre-pubescent boys by Pushtun men in Kandahar. But let an obscure man in Florida so much as raise the possibility that he might disrespect a book – an inanimate object – and the most powerful figures in the western world feel they have to weigh in.

Aside from all that, this obscure church’s website has been shut down, its insurance policy has been canceled, its mortgage has been called in by its bankers. Why? As Diana West wrote, why was it necessary or even seemly to make this pastor a non-person? Another one of Obama’s famous “teaching moments”? In this case teaching us that Islamic law now applies to all? Only a couple of weeks ago, the President, at his most condescendingly ineffectual, presumed to lecture his moronic subjects about the First Amendment rights of Imam Rauf. Where’s the condescending lecture on Pastor Jones’ First Amendment rights?

When someone destroys a bible, US government officials don’t line up to attack him. President Obama bowed lower than a fawning maitre d’ before the King of Saudi Arabia, a man whose regime destroys bibles as a matter of state policy, and a man whose depraved religious police forces schoolgirls fleeing from a burning building back into the flames to die because they’d committed the sin of trying to escape without wearing their head scarves. If you show a representation of Mohammed, European commissioners and foreign ministers line up to denounce you. If you show a representation of Jesus Christ immersed in your own urine, you get a government grant for producing a widely admired work of art. Likewise, if you write a play about Jesus having gay sex with Judas Iscariot.

So just to clarify the ground rules, if you insult Christ, the media report the issue as freedom of expression: A healthy society has to have bold, brave, transgressive artists willing to question and challenge our assumptions, etc. But, if it’s Mohammed, the issue is no longer freedom of expression but the need for “respect” and “sensitivity” toward Islam, and all those bold brave transgressive artists don’t have a thing to say about it.

Texas School Board Says no to Islam

The Texas school board gets this one wrong.  They shouldn’t curtail references to Islam in their curriculum, they should teach the truth about it– that Islam is an expansionist, imperialist, totalitarian political ideology cloaked in religion, and a threat to the Constitution.  That’s true of both the violent as well as the non-violent stealth jihad.  But this is a good start I guess.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State Board of Education adopted a resolution Friday that seeks to curtail references to Islam in Texas textbooks, as social conservative board members warned of what they describe as a creeping Middle Eastern influence in the nation’s publishing industry.

The board approved the one-page nonbinding resolution, which urges textbook publishers to limit what they print about Islam in world history books, by a 7-5 vote.  Critics say it’s another example of the ideological board trying to politicize public education in the Lone Star State.

“This is an expression of the board’s opinion, so it does not have an effect on any particular textbook,” said David Anderson, the general counsel for the Texas Education Agency, when asked by a board member what legal weight the resolution would carry.

“I believe that it’s happening in the current (social studies books) even though we can’t cover that in the resolution,” said board member Terri Leo, a Republican from Spring. The resolution sends a “clear message to publishers that it should not happen in the future.”

During public testimony, which included comments from activists as well as a handful of parents, Jonathan Saenz, a lobbyist for the conservative Liberty Institute, argued that the board was “doing the right thing … to prevent any type of religious discrimination or treat any religion in a way that’s incomplete.”

“The Board’s mission, and Texas’ future, is ill-served when the board chooses to use its limited meeting time to discuss and vote on discriminatory and politically motivated measures, such as this proposed resolution,” said Frank Knaack, of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas.

The resolution concludes by warning publishers the “State Board of Education will look to reject future prejudicial social studies submissions that continue to offend Texas law with respect to treatment of the world’s major religious groups by significant inequalities of coverage space-wise and by demonizing or lionizing one or more of them over others.”

Vatican Official: “Islam Will Sooner Or Later Conquer Majority of Europe”

Via Gateway Pundit, secular progressive multiculturalism is a civilization killer.  While you obsess about “don’t ask, don’t tell” and witchcraft, Vatican officials are warning Islam will sooner or later conquer a majority of Europe.

Europe will grow more “Islamicized” if Christian Europeans do not start having more children, and going back to Church, a senior Vatican official said this month. Msgr. Piero Gheddo, a famous missionary and an official with the Vatican’s Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, told Zenit news service that Europe’s indigenous inhabitants have abandoned Christianity and are becoming “paganized.”

“The fact is that, as a people, we are becoming ever more pagan and the religious vacuum is inevitably filled by other proposals and religious forces,” said Msgr. Gheddo, who founded AsiaNews, the Christian missionary news service. As religious practice diminishes in Christian Europe, “indifference spreads; Christianity and the Church are attacked.”

“If we consider ourselves a Christian country, we should return to the practice of Christian life, which would also solve the problem of empty cradles.”

Msgr. Gheddo pointed to demographic statistics showing that the population of native Italians is decreasing by 120,000 or 130,000 a year “because of abortion and broken families.” At the same time, 200,000 legal immigrants a year are moving into Italy. More than half of these, he said, are Muslims who continue to have the large families that Italians now eschew.

“Newspapers and television programs never speak of this,” he said. “However, an answer must be given above all in the religious and cultural fields and in the area of identity.”

Msgr. Gheddo was responding to the taunts of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who angered many on a recent official visit to Italy when he said that Europe should convert to Islam. He gave a lecture to 500 young women, who had been paid to attend, in which he urged them to convert and offered to find them Muslim husbands in Libya. The comments were denounced by Archbishop Robert Sarah, secretary of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, who called them a “provocation.”

But Msgr. Gheddo warned that the provocation could well have been a mere prediction.

“No newspaper – except Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Episcopal Conference – has seriously taken into consideration how to respond to this challenge of Islam, which sooner or later will conquer the majority in Europe,” he said.

Recent surveys conducted in Italy by local Catholic dioceses have found that the much-quoted number of Italians claiming to attend Mass weekly, 30 percent, can be deceptive. In Venice, it was discovered that the number of those actually attending is closer to 18 percent, and the numbers drop dramatically among younger Italians.

Fidel Castro firmly backs Israel’s right to exist: report

NEW YORK (AFP) – Fidel Castro, the longtime president and leftist icon who stepped aside during a health crisis but still leads the Cuban Communist Party, has told a reporter that Israel definitely has the right to exist. “Yes it does, without a doubt,” Castro, 84, told visiting US journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic magazine, according to a new article published Wednesday.

In the same interview Castro criticized Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust and said in an interview Tehran should acknowledge Israel’s fears for its own survival. Asked if Cuba was ready to establish diplomatic ties with Israel, Fidel Castro said that those things took time, the report added.

The former Cuban president who handed over power to his brother Raul in 2006 said Iran should understand the consequences of theological anti-Semitism.

“This went on for maybe two thousand years,” Castro was quoted as saying. “I don’t think anyone has been slandered more than the Jews. I would say much more than the Muslims. They have been slandered much more than the Muslims because they are blamed and slandered for everything. No one blames the Muslims for anything.”

“In my judgment here’s what happened to them: Reverse selection. What’s reverse selection? Over 2,000 years they were subjected to terrible persecution and then to the pogroms. One might have assumed that they would have disappeared; I think their culture and religion kept them together as a nation.”

“The Jews have lived an existence that is much harder than ours. There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust,” he said.

Castro’s conciliatory words of late about Israel come as a surprise, but they shouldn’t. The Left used to support Israel back in the day when they were still seen as socialist kibbutzim underdogs.  Then all that started to change when Israel began winning unwinnable wars and embracing capitalism.  But Fidel, like all those cars from the 50’s they still drive around in Cuba, is stuck in a timewarp.  His views on Israel have not evolved with those of the transnational Left who want to see Israel destroyed as a state.

Castro: Socialism Doesn’t Work

HAVANA – Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba’s communist economic model doesn’t work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago. The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel’s brother Raul, the country’s president, has said the same thing repeatedly. But the blunt assessment by the father of Cuba’s 1959 revolution is sure to raise eyebrows.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, asked if Cuba’s economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: “The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore” Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog.

He said Castro made the comment casually over lunch following a long talk about the Middle East, and did not elaborate. The Cuban government had no immediate comment on Goldberg’s account.  Since stepping down from power in 2006, the ex-president has focused almost entirely on international affairs and said very little about Cuba and its politics, perhaps to limit the perception he is stepping on his brother’s toes.

Goldberg, who traveled to Cuba at Castro’s invitation last week to discuss a recent Atlantic article he wrote about Iran’s nuclear program, also reported on Tuesday that Castro questioned his own actions during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, including his recommendation to Soviet leaders that they use nuclear weapons against the United States.

Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba has clung to its communist system.

The state controls well over 90 percent of the economy, paying workers salaries of about $20 a month in return for free health care and education, and nearly free transportation and housing. At least a portion of every citizen’s food needs are sold to them through ration books at heavily subsidized prices.

President Raul Castro and others have instituted a series of limited economic reforms, and have warned Cubans that they need to start working harder and expecting less from the government. But the president has also made it clear he has no desire to depart from Cuba’s socialist system or embrace capitalism.

Castro’s interview with Goldberg is the only one he has given to an American journalist since he left office.

Police kill Discovery Building Gunman

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Police shot and killed a gunman who held three hostages for several hours Wednesday at the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring, Md., authorities said. They said the hostages were safe.

At least one explosive device went off when he was shot, and other explosive devices could still be in the building in Montgomery County in suburban Washington, D.C., they said. It was not clear whether there was any damage.  Montgomery County police Chief Thomas Manger said no one was believed to have been injured beyond the gunman, whose condition he said was unknown. Other law enforcement authorities told NBC News that the gunman was dead.

The building in the close-in suburb of Washington was safely evacuated, including the Discovery Kids Place day care center, police said.  Law enforcement authorities told NBC News they believed the man was James Jay Lee or James Jae Lee, 43, a longtime protester at the building who was sentenced to six months of supervised probation for disorderly conduct in March 2008.

‘The planet does not need humans’

Lee appears to have posted environmental and population-control demands online, saying humans are ruining the planet and that Discovery should develop programs to sound the alarm.

“I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it,” the alleged manifesto reads, adding:

“Nothing is more important than saving … the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”

Lee said at the time that he experienced an ‘‘awakening” when he watched former Vice President Al Gore’s environmental documentary ‘‘An Inconvenient Truth.”
